Tucked into the hills of west Donegal, Glenties is no stranger to harsh Atlantic weather and high rainfall. But during a recent survey carried out by the team at Causeway Cleaning Ltd, we found something that’s quietly damaging many of the area’s homes: rising damp and deep-seated mould.
This wasn’t just a single property. It was a pattern—seen again and again across multiple homes in the area. And it’s a wake-up call for homeowners, landlords, and tenants alike.
Our survey covered a series of homes in and around Glenties, many of them traditional builds—some holiday lets, some long-term rentals, and others privately owned.
These are classic signs of rising damp, where groundwater moves up through porous building materials like bricks and plaster, often due to failed or missing damp-proof courses.
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) explains that rising damp is often misdiagnosed or ignored until it becomes serious—especially in rural and older properties.
When we investigated further, moisture readings confirmed what our eyes already suspected. In some areas, wall moisture content was over 20%, well above the safe zone.
