When the O’Donnells from Killybegs first reached out to us, they were at breaking point.
What started as a few black spots on the bathroom ceiling had spiralled into something much worse—widespread mould, damp smells throughout the house, peeling paint, and an overwhelming sense of defeat. They were ashamed to have people over. Their youngest son had started coughing at night. And no matter how often they cleaned, the mould kept coming back.
This is the story of how Causeway Cleaning Ltd helped one Killybegs family take their home back—and how we can help you too.
When Mrs O’Donnell called us, she was emotional. The family had tried everything—repainting, bleach sprays, even replacing furniture. Nothing worked. The mould always returned, worse than before.
They had already spent money on surface-level fixes, but what they needed was a proper solution—one based on evidence, science, and long-term prevention.
We arranged a full inspection for the following week.
When our team arrived in Killybegs, it didn’t take long to spot the extent of the problem.
Using a thermal imaging camera, we spotted cold bridging in several areas—especially behind the bed in the master bedroom. Moisture readings showed high damp levels in multiple wall sections.

To confirm the severity of the infestation, we used DNA testing to take surface swabs and air samples. Results revealed:
We designed a full remediation plan for the O’Donnells, which included:
This included sections of plasterboard and skirting that had spore colonisation. We used containment barriers to prevent cross-contamination.
We treated all affected areas with an IICRC-approved solution, followed by a full air-space sanitisation using ULV fogging equipment.
The family installed two new extractor fans, one in the bathroom and another in the kitchen, as well as a passive vent in the hallway.
We advised them on using a smart-controlled dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity under 60%.
Two weeks later, we returned to do a follow-up air test. The spore count had dropped dramatically, and there were no signs of mould regrowth.
But the most important change wasn’t just the walls—it was how the family felt.
“I can finally breathe,” Mrs O’Donnell said. “The house smells clean again. My son sleeps through the night now. It feels like a home again.”
They sent us before-and-after photos, which we proudly display in our gallery (with permission). The walls are fresh, the air is clear, and the fear is gone.
